‘I love the authority of black, its severity, its obviousness, its radicalism. Its power of contrast gives an intense presence to every colour, and when it illuminates the darkest it gives them a sombre greatness. Black has unexpected possibilities. Mindful of what I do not know, I go out to meet them.’

Pierre Soulages

An empty stage at night, the systems and rigging brought to ground, the space brightly lit. A lone technician is at work dismantling the set, but when she falls through the theatre’s arches, another world is waiting…

Laying bare the hidden workings of the ‘black box’, Black M1 is a tribute to the madness and passion of the cursed play, Shakespeare’s Macbeth, and an aerial homage to the superstitions, mysteries and beliefs of theatre itself. By uncovering its inner workings, it reveals theatre’s essence: the strange intensity of atmosphere, the sense of a world in suspension, the feeling of a space where the imagination may freely unfold.

Drawing us into this paradoxical space where nothing is real and yet profound truths are there to be found, Black M1 is Mélissa Von Vépy’s tenth creation. Its title refers to the M1 fire safety standard – required by all materials in the theatre that are black, and therefore, ordinarily, invisible…

‘With the body as her principal means of expression, Mélissa Von Vépy offers us an infinite palette of emotions. An intense and poetic experience that offers another take on the world of the theatre.’

‘Mélissa Von Vépy delivers a very physical performance, beautiful and captivating. (…) Black M1 has pace – the audience, even more than the artist, hasn’t the time to breathe as black turns to red, the colour of blood. The audience are all the more absorbed by the piece as it brings in notes of lightness and humour. A high-flying performance.’
