Creation September 2013
at the Theatre of Haute-Pierre, Strasbourg / Les Migrateurs
Solo // duration : 50 min

A living puppet, a puppet ‘being’.

A person relieved from decision-making, emotion, responsibility… Or a thing shaped by conditioning, limited and all tangled up?

A woman, appearing sometimes the master, sometimes the servant, struggles with this contradiction as she brings us to heart of its problem. Reckless, stubborn, she explores the ground as it shifts constantly beneath her.

Dreaming about what might happen if our burdens disappeared, VieLLeicht takes us on a tense quest for an inner clearness – that joyful, transparent, affectless interiority that Heinrich von Kleist, in his essay ‘On the Marionette Theatre’, calls ‘grace’.

It is rare to find ourselves in moments when we are thoughtful, responsible, open – and yet we keep on searching.

‘The humorous metaphors and constant unpredictability of VieLLeicht transport us with a formidable intensity. It is a metaphysical, unresolved quest, buoyed by our desires and fantasies, weighed down by our liabilities and finite natures. VieLLeicht suspends the flight of time itself.’

Rue 89, J.-P. Thibaudat

‘This little piece, which we could call an aerial aria or sonnet for body and strings, owes part of its power to the elements which accompany it: the lighting of Xavier Lazarini and the sound of Jean-Damien Ratel. VieLLeicht is like an offering made to the Earth’s gravitational attraction by an elf named Mélissa Von Vépy.’
